Part 1/4: 2009 Hyundai National Surfing Championships presented by Quiksilver.

Thanks to NZ Greenroom Productions.

The opening day of the Hyundai National Surfing Championships presented by Quiksilver played host to near perfect conditions at Piha Beach with a clean 1.5m – 2.0m swell that the Open Men’s surfers relished the chance to compete in.

The come back of Daniel Kereopa (Rag) took place over three heats today with Kereopa winning twice and placing second once. His surfing included two near perfect nine point rides (out of a possible 10).

Kereopa went into semi retirement in 2007 after winning the National Champs and opted to compete solely on the Hyundai Pro Longboard Tour.

Commenting after his heat Kereopa showed some uncharacteristic nerves but was happy with his performances all the same.

“Nerve racking, really really nervous today” commented Kereopa. “But it was nice to have good waves and show everyone that I can still cut it with the best of them”.

Unfazed by his low scoring second placing in round 3 which he put down to “a change in tide and hence conditions”, Kereopa is now looking forward to Round 4 where he has drawn the events number one seed Maz Quinn (Gis).
