A psyched Allan Byrne and his small team of expert board builders are currently at work on what may become among the surfing world’s most prized possessions. Three perfectly manicured custom boards, hand-shaped by AB, will be waiting on the stage at February 17’s Bondi presentation night, one for each of the winners of Biggest Wave, Biggest Paddle-in and Biggest Slab.

The trophies, commissioned by Oakley, will be "finned up, strapped, and ready to go", according to AB. They will become perpetual trophies for the Awards in the years to come. "Phil (Oakley's Phil Ward) called to talk about making some mini-replica boards as trophies," says the master boardmaker. "But then we thought, nahh, let's go all the way and make ‘em life-size."

In another classic Big Wave Awards development, Hawaii's Darrick Doerner has been confirmed as a special guest at the all-star gala presentation night, slated for the Bondi Open Air Cinema. Doerner is a mega legend among the big wave surfing fraternity. The North Shore ex-lifeguard, who grew up riding with ‘70s heroes like Eddie Aikau and pioneered the modern era of heavy-water charging alongside Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama, will help present AB's epic trophies.
