This Saturday 'The Maya Bar' is hosting a charity event for the Surfbreak Protection Society and the Coromandel Watchdog both of these organisations have people dedicated to protecting our mountains rivers and beaches.

SPS is doing a lot of work at the moment with continuing problems with the Whangamata wastewater increased dredging, of the marina channel and changes have already been noticed on the bar. Our SPS southern representative Nic Reeves is keeping us informed of dredging of Port Otago and possible affects on nearby surf beaches.

It is proposed that an incredibly large amount of matter from the harbour will be blasted, dredged and dumped off the harbour entrance at Haywards point, options for dumping offshore may be costly and consideration may be given to near shore dump sites, the threat of significant impacts on the surf breaks from Aramoana to Karitane, including Murderers, three major national surf breaks, is obvious,
and detailed scientific advice is urgently sought.

SPS is working on many such cases, we have had considerable input into the recently released Fresh Water Policy Statement, Taranaki Regional Coastal Policy Statement, and are genuinely concerned about the Environment Minister holding back the release of the National Coastal Policy Statement.

Coromandel Watchdog are in a state of all hands on deck with opposing the mining of schedule four lands, and we all know where those tailings end up...

The Guys at SPS won't rest until our surfbreaks, these unique natural structures, are given the consideration by policy makers that they deserve.

Both Coromandel Watchdog and SPS are very concerned about proposed offshore luminite mining on our North Eastern Seaboard, and are watching developments closely. Iron sand mining on the West Coast is all ways rearing .its ugly head

These guys need your support, so all you guys in Welly come on down to the Maya Bar, 20 Blair St just of Courtenay Place this Saturday and raise a toast to them and their valiant efforts in halting Clean Green New Zealand becoming a fool's Paradise!
