Less than one week after a highly successful first event of the series was completed at Mount Maunganui, a dismal outlook for swell along the East Coast has given organisers no option but to hold the event off.
"There are a few waves at Whangamata today but we are not confident that the swell will last through to the weekend" commented Billabong Event Manager AJ Matthews. "If we did go ahead with the event, we know the surf is likely to be contestable at best. We want to give everyone a reasonable chance out in the water and that wasn't going to be the case this weekend" added Matthews in regards to the postponement.
Billabong has opted to schedule the event for the following weekend (20th - 21st February) and complete it in two big days of surfing at Whangamata.
The rescheduling looks like it will fall in line with a long range forecast for swell from an easterly airstream and tropical cyclone out to the north east of New Zealand. This bodes well for an action packed weekend of surfing in decent sized waves if predictions come to fruition.
The five winners (excludes Under 12 Girls) of the Billabong Series after the three events each win a return flight to the Gold Coast to compete in the Occy Grom Comp. Winners at each event win a massive package of Billabong gear and a Sony MP3 player.
