Learn about rips, holes and undertows, how to identify them, escape them and use them to your advantage. With over 45 years experience, Aotearoa Surf School is recommended by both Surfing NZ and Water Safety NZ and offers surf lessons and coaching by International Surfing Association Level 1 and Level 2 surf coach Wayne Glover.

Based at Te Arai just 80 minutes north of Auckland and fully mobile, lessons can be provided anywhere between Orewa and Ruakaka.

The surf beaches in the area are among the safest in the world yet provide ideal conditions for surfers of all skill levels.

Beginners learn in safe gentle waves in waist deep water with your coach right next to you. Our 8:1 coaching ratio means you get the best supervision and tuition.

Surfin’ Safaris is based 5 minutes from Karioitahi beach in South Auckland. You can come to us for lessons, tune-ups or board and wetsuit hire OR we can arrange longer tours in 4WD comfort (including pick-up and drop off) – either camping or in accommodation that suits you. Mark, originally from California, has 38 years surfing experience and holds Surf NZ Coaching Level 1, Surf Lifesaving and First Aid certificates. Our specialty is customizing surf or ski tours to suit you and your level of experience. Overseas visitors are welcome (airport transfers can be arranged upon request). Lion Rock Surf School is situated on Auckland's west coast, a 40 minute drive to the city. The shop is located on the side of the Piha Store, it's probably the closest surf shop in NZ to the surf, and is right across the road from the camping ground.

Piha Beach is one of the safest and most consistent beaches in NZ. It is surrounded by massive rocks that look like animals and is nestled on the edge of a National rain forest only 40 minutes from downtown Auckland.

Piha Surf School has ISA (International Surfing Ass.) qualified instructors who use local knowledge and advanced techniques to get students up and riding as quickly and safely as possible.

We have smaller classes so students spend more time in a 'one on one' situation with their instructor. We also specialise in training competitive, advanced and intermediate surfers.
