Barnfield is a top contender for the event and will face up against rivals Owen Barnes ( Mount Maunganui) and Thomas Kibblewhite (Orewa) ; both surfers placing in the Top 3 on the overall 2010 Ratings, in the hotly contested Open Men's Division.

Kibblewhite recently placed in the semi finals at the prestigious 2010 Noosa Festival Of Surfing Pro Division ,and surfing against the worlds best including former and current World Champions,"TK" turned heads and put NZ on the map with his powerful surfing . Kibblewhite has also just been named in the 2010 New Zealand Surfing team who will be competing in the ISA World Surfing Game in Peru in October, along with 2009 NILC Event winner Daniel Procter ( Gisborne).

Other names to watch out for in the 2010 event include NZ Longboard Veteran Kelly Ryan ( Gisborne ) , Anthony McColl ( Mount Maunganui ) along with a handful of top Open Men's surfers.Alongside the Open Men's Division , the Women's Division will see top female surfer Belinda Goodwin ( Raglan ) go up against a number of local surfers. Mike Thomson ( Raglan ) also known as "Mickey T" will be competing in the Over 50's.

Event Organiser, Hannah Howard , has made a Stirling effort and secured some excellent sponsorship and prizes across all the divisions and this years event looks to build on the success of the 2009 North Island Championships held at Mangawhai Heads.
