After a lot of deliberation, we have decided to run the North Island Longboarding Champs this weekend. There is a south east swell heading up the east coast which is set to kick in Friday but not peak until Sunday. At this stage, optimum swell conditions are looking like they will be Saturday afternoon / Sunday.

This has been a very tough call, as the forecast is marginal and, as you are no doubt all aware, susceptible to change! We have received input from various people and feel this is the best decision to make.

Tom Kibblewhite and I surfed Te Arai point this morning. Sand has been pushed into the corner and the banks are really good, we had 2-3ft waves peeling from outside the point into the beach - these waves have also come from a south swell.

We are hoping that Te Arai will again pull in the swell over the weekend and if all goes to plan, the contest will be held there. Should the conditions be significantly smaller, we may move the event to Mangawhai Heads. This will be confirmed via text alert at 7am Saturday morning.

If worst comes to worst and the swell dissapears entirely, we will move the contest to the west coast. It will be held down the 4WD track at Muriwai beach. This is a last resort. Should this be the case, we will notify you on Friday afternoon via text and email.

We have 62 people registered for the event, with people traveling from all over the country - including the South Island. It is for this reason we have needed to make the call earlier rather than leave it till Friday, which we hope you all appreciate. Postponing the event is undesirable, particularly at this time of the year.

At this stage, you will need to be at the Te Arai point carpark for registration at 8am on Saturday morning. We will then let you know the official start time. If we notify that the event is to be held at Mangawhai Heads, the registration will take place there.

A big thank you in advance to the judges we have attending: Trevor Medcalf, Gav Bisman, Mark Stockman and Isaac Johnston.

If anyone has any queries, concerns or feedback regarding this decision; please feel free to contact me.

Many thanks and fingers crossed for good waves,

Hannah Howard

The North Island Longboarding Championships are to be held the weekend of the 31st of October and 1st of November. It will take place between Forestry and Mangawhai on the east coast of the North Island – the exact location is condition dependant and will be confirmed on the Wednesday prior to the competition

The NILBC has come about, in a nut shell, because there isn’t one. And there is no reason why there shouldn’t be. It is a good way to get everyone on their toes and amping for the upcoming Hyundai Longboard Pro Tour.

With some solid sponsors backing the event, there are plenty of prizes for all participants. 1st place of the Open Mens division will receive a $750 cash cheque, thanks to Origin Jeans. Also up for grabs are some great surf gear packs, Havaiana Jandals and even a 9”1 Morris Longboard as a spot prize to be given out on the day.

A $40 registration fee gets you a comp T-shirt and drink bottle. Places are limited so get in quick – registration is first in first served. All entries are to be received by October 15th and will be confirmed via email. Late entries incur an additional $10 charge.

The divisions include:
- Open Mens
- Open Womens
- Under 18
- Over 40 Mens
The Over 50’s section will be run with the Over 40’s, however there will be a separate prize for the best Over 50’s competitor.
