Yeah, I've seen that place fully cranking. Six foot plus. It was the first time in 23 years of surfing that I wasn't able to paddle out somewhere. I ended up at the beach just round the corner which was two foot and sad. Surfed Robinhood Bay the next day pretty nice but.

Forest/scrub fire near the bike park. It was fully ablaze when I snuck through and I passed one of the appliances a couple of K's down the road. Apparently they had helo's landing on the road for fuel and water and everything. Would have been pretty exciting if I'd been a few minutes later.

Spud, If you'd let me know you were in the area I could have had you Supping Orewa yesterday. I'd never bothered with Orewa in about 20 years of surfing untill about a year and a 1/2 ago. It is more fun than it looks but you need a big fat long board. Waves go and go...
I can beat the clubbies out the back on the SUP when they're on those knee paddle things. I don't think they like it very much especially when they're all racing hard and I'm just paddling alongside

That sounds like the same day. It was after the wine and food festival. I went down there on the high tide. A local reckoned a couple of guys had surfed it earlier on the low when it was easier to paddle out. Perhaps that was you guys?

Yeah, but I spent most of the time over at the Barrier. See Shore Boys for some pics. No time to surf in Orewa on Saturday as I was visiting various relations in various retirement villages.

I am a good paddler SPud from years of surfing gnarly drifts and rips in tassie and vicco!!
I once caught a wave past paul cannon at T-Bay then paddled back out and caught another wave past him again... LOL

Naaahhh It was just a real lucky moment when I entred the water I guess...
I timed the sets tho, ran and hit the shorebreak like i was in hawaii..!!! sliding across top of the foam you know the one!!
Ive got a new theory about getting out back when its like that and its not fighting the sideway drift but actually letting it take you like paddling 45 degreees out to sea WITH the drift... I mean its only drifting cause it wants to get out the back too!!
I dunno but man it was funny in the arvo when i got out the back again and my mate failed again!!! EH RedVan!!!?? Eh mate!!

Not me on Sat, there was shortboarding to do around the place... One of my mates surfed it on his mal though, he might have been out. Little guy who rides it with lots of style.

If you were catching up with rellies in retirement villages you were possibly right by my house, we're pretty close to the big one in Stanmore bay. Maybe next time you'll be ready to cross that SUP bridge. There'd be at least a couple of Shore Boys pages in Spud SUPing.

Nice video. I think the swell got bigger as the day wore on as well. I'm a pretty strong paddler and I made about 10 attempts over an hour or so. It was so frustrating as the waves weren't breaking that far off shore. I never even got close as there were no gaps between the sets. I tried to clamber around the rocky headland there but the tide was so high that it was impossible. I thought about paddling round from whites but it was getting dark at that stage.

I've surfed all over the world over 23 years and some pretty heavy spots as well. That was the first time I've not been able to paddle out somewhere. Funny to think that I'd be defeated by a spot in Blenheim!
