not sure about the dinner, i'm guessing bluff oysters weren't cooked up though.

it said 'Where the Dawning of the Age of Biology Was Officially Announced'..so whatever that means.

interesting that Benoit Madelbrot was there. mandelbrot fractals fascinate me.

if anyone wants a cool easy to create mandelbrot design programme then i can post the download link? or just google 'tierazon' and you should find the tutorial and free download. you'll need a good spec computer though cus fractal designs can become mega huge files.

some fractal pictures i have seen can quickly increase in size so that if scaled, they become bigger than the universe in no time...or so i'm told.

Just got back from a surf and was wondering if some of the SUP troubles in NZ might be related to the lack of surf etiquette knowledge? Most SUPs in the line up here are also surfers...they pay a lot more attention to whose around and how to best behave. Maybe your SUPs need a bit of educating? Lots of places here (restuarants, gas stations, surf shops, dive shops, etc) display "surf etiquette" posters. Can't say that helps everyone, but I'm afraid to think of what it might look like without preventive measures...

Hey Grncrl ....Our SUP problems are merely that like boogers, mini mal riders, kneeboarders and tow in jockeys, they have no place in the lineup, they should go find somewhere quiet to practise thier sordid perversions.

Blue rinse disco jabes?? average age there would be about 30, if you had to put out the 'stats' it would be probably 60 to 70% female - age 60% 18-30 / 30% 30 -40 / 20% 40+
with such a high female to male ratio you should pop down, you might get lucky

Aloha Mr. Statik...I'm questioning my comprehension on a few terms: boogers = boogie boarders (aka tea bags)?
mal riders = longboarders? I like to call SUP = sweepers, although that hasn't fully caught on yet I guess we get lucky here that most places aren't suitable for all types of riding. You would never find a longboarder at Sandy's for example. They'd get killed, the wave is too fast and shallow.

most sup riders over here are kooks who can barely surf a longboard so take up sup riding as an alternate means to wreck havoc as they figure they might get more waves with a paddle

Hi grn your already buying the ticket here eh!
boogers = boogie board riders
mini mals = not a longboard but shaped like one, not a shortboard, come in sizes between 7ft - 8'6"... popular with kooks, beginners, once a month warriors, summer surfers, lazy paddlers and wavehogs.
should be banned. I think they call them Hybrids in your part of the world.
most NZ waves are well suited to wider equipment, super hollow reefs are thin on the ground though there are a few. no excuse for the minis though, being niether one thing or the other they are the worst of objects.... a compromise

You can see my Statiks reply that etiquette doesn't play a big part in the NZ surfing scene. If you ride a shortboard you have some sort of right that elevates you above all other water craft.

I'm the first to admit I get annoyed with longboards and SUPs due to their superior paddling power but if your skill set if good enough it shouldn't be that much of an issue.

try surfing with 30 of them at once on a 3ft swell at piha, its hard to get anything. so its best to find a worse peak by yourself.

etiquette in nz is getting worse but im sure thats a world wide thing. way more learners etc with zero idea on rules.

i hear they are lining the gold coast with etiquette boards explaining the rules to try and stop kooks from getting beaten up lol

we have a different approach in this part of nz Blunt.

the way it works is quite simple...

what happens is we actually call each other into waves, usually the guy/gal who's on the peak or takeoff spot, and this then gets reciprocated.

it's a strange and unusual concept that other areas seem to have neglected to even think about doing.

this way, we all get our share of waves and also share the stoke of watching others get waves.

if you are on land watching surfers, then it's customary to yell as loud as possibly and cheer on the rider, no matter how much of a ripper or kook they are...big moves can almost cause a state of insane frenzy from spectators.

maybe we just have a different mindset?

the world would be a better place if this option was considered more often.

i think youll find seeka that approach works cause you wouldnt tend to have any form of a crowd. if your surfing with 30 of your best friends your not going to get any waves calling everyone into waves.

That still happens in other parts of NZ too seeka. But at the crowded spots like SNAP said the ettiquite gets biffed out the window in favour of wave count.

I can't be fuked with it personally but its not confined to the sea. I've seen massive que snaking at ski-field lift lines thats just head shaking. Its all about getting the most waves or ski runs in a day instead of enjoying the full on experience. Spose thats why we call it the rat race.

i can understand the crowd factor, thats one of the reason i bailed from aucks. greed and self satisfaction had seemed to become something ugly to witness.

another thing the cheer factor brings is it drives you surf a bit better and to enjoy the ride more. riding along an a good overhead wave and hearing a few guys on shore hooting at your efforts is something to behold..even if you surf at an average level.

Is that the best you can do stats?. I do surf, have done so for 27 years. Last winter was my first full winter without going surfing in 27 years and I've missed 3 or 4 summers in those 27 years. I'd say I'm still classed as someone who surfs just not that active at the moment.

Sounds like you need to come south for some uncrowded waves where you get called into pumping walls instead of fighting the crowds.

1.75 for an MP3 ... your kidding right?

iTunes et el are only ine notch off being the bottom feeders the record labels still are.

How the F can they still justify $18 for an online purchase of a whole album? Its no wonder downloaading via peer to peer networks and torrents is still so popular. And yet the labels still fight it.

Pepsi have a Promotion going where you get one free download for every purchase of one of their lines of drink. I think this is moving down the right track but its really just a trap to get you to register, give your paypal details and then fork out $1.75 for a song.

And yet the labels still fight downloading. And yet other people makes squillians by selling advertising space of there own websites (not music related).
