We get that scenario on the Welly West all the time in the summer. Death NW onshore for days and flat. I feel your pain.
Speaking of the Welly West, looks like a bit of a groundy for Friday/Saturday. Will keep you all posted.

The Kapiti coast is very shallow but most of the Welly West is actually very deep due to proximity to Cook Strait. Indeed if you get a proper groundy over there there are some spots which can pack quite a punch.

http://www.wannasurf.com/spot/Australia_Pacific/New_Zealand/New_Zealand_NI/SW_Coast/pukerua_bay/index.html [wannasurf.com]

However due to a narrow swell window true groundies are pretty rare usually . In the summer the prevailing NNW winds are often actually from a SW airflow and are only NNW through Cook Strait. Consequently the NW winds can be extremely localized and therefor produce no swell at all despite their strength.

LOL turn it up BP!

The only wave I would label as being "superior" is an infamous little rivermouth that IsoMag features a lot, and I'm sure Jelly has shown a few photos of the same spot on this forum as well.

Otherwise, Matata, Coastlands, Airports, Whakatane Heads and one other spot all rule.

You're a kook, so your opinion isn't worth a damn because your idea of a "good wave" is anything that walls up, crumbles over and never barrels LOL. Just admit it, Coastlands is too heavy for you boi
