Hey-OOOOOO Christchurchians!!!
I'm 82kg and I can duck dive my 9'1" mal at Brighton. I use the many rips and channels there to get out the back, the mal gives me paddle power to go hard when the lull happens, timing is everything. paddled from the beach plenty of times in the 6' range. I'm often surfing the back banks, well out from the pier, by myself when it's solid. Walk the pier and have a good look at what's happening out there, check how the water's moving, how the rips shift and looking down the beach for indicators for the next set.
So far in the last 10 years I've only been defeated at Brighton once, though sometimes it can take 25-35mins to get there, once your there it's easy. Hardest part is between 1st and 2nd observation platforms. I don't just ride my mal there, I just don't take a knife to a gun fight.
Why not just jump off the pier?

@Hulio1, I definitely try and stay out of the way of other surfers. I guess that's harder at taylors but I wouldn't even go out unless I can get an area to myself to kook it up in.
@db, I wasn't thinking about anything too high performance just yet, but maybe a good quality semi-fish like the Webber Afterburner or an Aloha Stryka.
I do jump off the pier in certain conditions, but depending on the tide it can be too shallow to jump, high tide is a 7m drop low tide can be a 9m drop, on a good low tide the back bank can be chest deep at the end of the pier.
Geez, that's pretty shallow!

may I ask... what is the purpose of this pier?
There was an old wooden one back in the day, guess they wanted to rebuild it. The main reason I can see for it being there is because Brighton in England is famous for it's pier/s.

Scarborough/Sumner is a great place to learn - easy duckdiving and usually plenty of peaks. Just watch out for the rip that goes past the breakwater by the lifeboat club, can get pretty strong. It's easy if you know it's there, just paddle into the middle of the bay to get out of it and belly a wave in if you're concerned.

I've tried on numerous occasions to get my wife to take a pic of me in the water (just for my profile of course) and, err.... well, we'll leave it there shall we!

Cool frame grab of an empty during pier construction.
This whole photo set is awesome for a local , I was rather young at the time but I forgot what Brighton looked like without the pier and library.
Hey does anyone have that kiwisurf or nzsurf mag that did a spread on the waves during the pier construction? Some good pics if I remember correctly. Post a scan if you gotz.
