I've been riding a 7ft x 2 5/8 x 21 minimal since november last year.
I'm a kook for sure but I'm over riding whitewash too. My balance and popups are ok. I just can't seem to get out the back easily - or at least far enough to catch some unbroken ones.
Once it's neck high, I'll either be trying to push-up over the wave or go under it, not quite a duck dive but my attempt at one. neither work too well for waves/wash with any power. I went out yesterday and spent about 80% of the time battling whitewash feeling totally demoralised after!
I try to pick a spot that's calm when I first head out but it all seems so random.. I can't really read it.
Is all this just practice? and is anyone totally self taught here?
Would switching to a lighter smaller board help me get through it?
is taylors a better spot to learn at that brighton?

How much you weigh? Where are you mostly surfing? Brights, or Sumner?
u have to scope the beach for a rip out the back, or somewhere theres less waves breaking. often it pays to watch a few others go out first or even follow them. tragically you live in chch so often its a whole beach of closeouts so you just got to power your way out back.
if theres a set coming just half paddle and say engery for when theres a lull then go hard and make it out back.

SNAP awards
So true. There really is no better place than another to paddle out along Brights. It may look like a rip, but it's going sideways to the Waimak or Whitewash Heads, and not out the back at all.
As Snap says, often it's best just to get past the shore dump, hold your spot and wait for a lull to get out the back.
Your board sounds like a good kook board. Probably keep it for now. A smaller board might let you out the back, but then you'd catch sweet FA. Though the bstrd with minimals is they're generally too bouyant to duck dive, and too small to turtle roll.
I learnt mostly at Taylors. Lord I musta p1ssed some people off though. My advice there is yeah, surf Taylors until Oct, then if you're not confident enough, leave it alone in the busy season rather than adding to the melee.

bout 80kg and 188cm tall. yeah I always surf new brighton.. I might try taylors while it's not busy

It's probably best not to go to taylors till you can duckdive and control your board on the wave when it's good and/or crowded. There's nothing worse than someone bailing off their board in front of you because they can't duckdive, it's dangerous. You need to be able to dodge the masses too.
Scarborough might be a good option for you. Just paddle off the breakwall, catch a wave and run back around and do it all over again. It will be a good place to practice duckdiving too due to the gutless nature of wave.
