Kaikoura Range from my car deck this morning. We can also look up the Waiau valley to see the Nelson Lakes mountains as well.

Awesome experience in the surf yesterday: I'm paddling back out at "Barbwires," a stone's throw north of Trestles, and I hear a loud "pooooffff" then see plenty o'fin.
Instinct and immediate thought: "shark!"...secondary thought of reason: that was the sound of a "blow hole."
Moments later, myself and the 2 other guys on the peak were surrounded by a pod of porpoises. Must have been a dozen of 'em. Man, were they big and thankfully they were playful. They were close enough to touch and stuck around for about 10 minutes or so, playing in the waves and fully takin' over.

Yeah, I've surfed in Kaiks a number of times. I usually get a surf down there on my way down the South Island. I've never had it epic though.

We mostly just see the wee fellers down in the South Island, Grlncrl - the local Hectors Dolphins are really small, with a rounded dorsal fin. Curious, but not really playful like your ones!
Just a tip for adopting the local vernacular - I've not really heard anyone call them 'porpoises' in NZ.
when will it go sw in christchurch on sunday? any takers??

The North Island's pretty beautiful but it's the South Island that takes the cake.
Here is a surf spot on the other side of these mountains. Perhaps only 30km away.

This is the view looking east in winter. The mirror lake in the other shot is the Tasman Glacier terminal lake. You can stay in a great hotel just down the road at the Hermitage Mt.Cook. It's quite good value for money during the winter. If you don't visit this place before you leave NZ I will personally track you down and kick your 4ss!

Good old winter. Good conditions and no crowd. I ditched the hood but far out the duck diving on the first paddle out was murder.
Right. Mrs db has insisted I get over it and join you crazy bstards for the solstice tradition tomorrow morning, as I will apparently be unfleepinbearable later in the week if I haven't had a surf. So I will be there sometime shortly after 7... In the rain... and howling SW... Good times.
