The funboard seems like an appealing concept to a new surfer.

Can someone enlighten me to the pros/cons of a funboard vs super fish type board for surfing in shitbum small surf?

get a short chunky single fin. iv got one of roys and its a sweet ride. have ridden three or four other single fins and rate em in most conditions. but then thats just my opinion.

Check out Barron's Punk Fish - great little boards - quite keen to get one (or a longboard)(or both).

Gotta Agree with Dunga my single fin is the board i find most fun in the largest variety of waves
my old MiniMal ( the old unfashonable word for funboard ) was heaps of fun too and you get to pi$$ off puritanical shortboarders like statik and jabes for free. BONUS

Hmm, Captain Kook reporting for duty...

As the proud owner of (among other things) a superfish and a mini mal (essentially a funboard plus a few inches), and having ridden a decent variety of both...

I think one common difference can be - although both have fairly flat rocker throughout, funboards have a wider nose, often with a bit more kick in the rocker, leading to less nose buryings, and more recoveries from dodgy takeoffs.

Also, I find that generally, funboards are more curl boards, whereas feesh tend to fly off down the line. Which is fine if you're a kook who can cut back, and troublesome if you just want to stay in the curl and go straight (Sumner styles).

Those, to me, are the two essential differences. Anyone care to add to that?

those who can do scooter old chap,

got talking to a chap who came into work the other day because he had a surfco email.

Doesnt surf in the winter, hasnt surfed for 4 months anyway, rides a mini when he does, he asked me what I rode, i said "usually a 6'9" "Really? well, your ten years younger than me" he said.. (he was 41 ) Happily told me he was thinking of getting an SUP.... , what did i think? he asked... "Oh... it think it would be ideal for you" was my reply.....

I'm thinking it'd be premature for a newbie to get on a fish until basic turns/moves have been mastered on a funboard/mal right?

Nah you could chuck a newbie with aptitude on a fat fish, a fatburner or a superfish XL. But personally, I'd go the minimal way if I could do my time again.

The ease-of-pearling factoid seems like a biggie though but I guess that's where a bit of aptitude comes in.

so something like a Fatburner would do the job just as well as a funboard in crappo surf?

get the single fin for sure if your just after 'the ease-of-pearling". dont purchase this mass produced overated p.o.s. go to a local shaper and get a custom now. NOW. NOW!!!!!!!

actually, dont let me tell you what you shold ride. nor the others, but i do suggest you go to a local shaper with a mate who you know is a competent surfer and check out what they have to offer.

support the local. stay kiwi.
