Poll: Should Kitesurfing be run by Yachting NZ?

  • Yes Yachting NZ would support it well.

  • No it is more aligned with the surfing community and Surfing NZ should have the rights.

If you surf in Christchurch you get used to surfing some marginal short period wind chop and most of the time it’s onshore slop.

This summer has been no exception - the swells have been few and far between. Aside from the week's worth of macking east swell in early January we have been pretty well wave starved. Enter the peninsula - there are a lot of options for something with a bit more push and it's a lot less crowded than say Taylor's Mistake on an average day. So when the two meter south swell showed up mid-week on Swell Map, it was time to gas up the car and head out to Magnet for some uncrowded point breaking lefts.

  • This way for south swell. This way for south swell.

All the signs of a good session were there as we headed off - the paper had confirmed the south swell was on the way. The wind was NE and not too strong, the sun was even out! We wound our way through the bays and it wasn't long before we were amping with Magnet in our sights: the point definitely firing.

The trail of white water was obvious as we descended the last snaking section of gravel road into the car park. We rounded the last few bends to see a packed car park and realized that we were by no means the only ones amping for good after-work surf.

Undeterred, we suited up and I decided to take some water shots while Hannon headed straight into the line-up of around 50 people.

  • Reality check! Reality check!

Snaking and drop-ins were the order of the day with every wave ridden a slalom to avoid the crowd.

The sun started to set so I headed in and grabbed the fat burner to make the most of the last few sets. Luckily, by then the circus had left town and it was me, Hannon and the last fateful few with plenty of waves to go around. Andy
