But Quiksilver’s event guru, Rod Brooks, says it’s far from a done deal.
“We don’t want anyone to have any false expectations on it at this stage,” Brooks told ASL. “It’s still a work in progress. We’re doing our due diligence on it but there’s a fair way to go.”
As a result, Quik has pulled the event out of scheduling consideration at the ASP Board meetings in Huntington Beach next week. Brooks says he hopes to have some more concrete information on the event late this year after more groundwork is done, including factors like signing up a presenting sponsor and ensuring site security, including competitor safety.
“I know for individuals it’s safe to go there. But when you run a big event, you become a target… We’ve had our disappointments with having to cancel events at G-Land before and we just want to make sure everything’s in place before we make any moves.”
The ASP is under some pressure to develop more left-breaking world title event locations after two high profile spots – Fiji and Mundaka – dropped off the schedule in recent years. G-Land, if it can happen, would fill that void.
