Poll: Should Kitesurfing be run by Yachting NZ?

  • Yes Yachting NZ would support it well.

  • No it is more aligned with the surfing community and Surfing NZ should have the rights.

  • No a new association should be set up by Kitesurfers.

Andy Irons (HAW), 31, former three-time ASP World Champion, stepped away from competition in 2009 - a chance to clear his head and recharge the batteries after an unprecedented assault on the world’s best surfers. The down time has served the phenomenal natural-footer well, and Irons is chomping at the bit to get back onto the ASP World Tour in 2010. Surfline caught up with the Kauaian to see where his head was at as 2009 came to a close. This is their story...

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MAIN FOCUS OVER THE LAST ELEVEN MONTHS?
Since I told myself that I wasn't going to do the tour next year and they gave me the wildcard, I just got back into surfing for the reasons that I started to do it which was 'cause I loved it. And, you know, it took a little while. I was getting so over the contest surfing that I didn't like surfing period, and that was scary. I didn't know what was going to happen and it was a strange time and I didn't know what the next chapter was going to be. This last year has been really cool just to going on a bunch of trips. And I got to realize how good doing the Tour is.IS IT

OFFICIAL, DO YOU PLAN TO HOP BACK ON TOUR NEXT YEAR?
Yeah, I'm doing it! I'm not gonna be like, 'maybe' guy. I got to take a year off, now I'm gonna go back to do it again.

DID YOU MISS IT?
I missed it. For sure, I missed it. For the first couple events, I'd follow it on the internet and check it out. A couple of my friends did good. I was definitely following [Dustin] Barca and I like watching Parko's heats. I check out everyone, see what everyone's up to. It's kind of like your old friends, when you don't see them for a while. I was keeping in touch with Freddy P. And now that it's coming to the last event... it went really fast, just like it does on the Tour. I think it went faster off the Tour.

WAS MAKING 'STILL FILTHY' A BIG PART OF YOUR YEAR OFF?
Definitely. The first half I didn't do many trips, then the back half I did probably about 12 trips. So, yeah, that's a lot. I was averaging two trips a month for about four or five months.
