A fairly tame sunrise revealed a solid 6-8ft swell with some rogue sets just to make things interesting.
The offshores hadn't been blowing that long and the swell was just starting to settle - things looked promising for the dawn patrol crew. These pics were snapped from dawn down at Cronulla and the Point and show a range of activity that makes a photographer's life interesting, especially in the early morning light. If the waves weren't quite right there were also other things to shoot.
A tow-in crew were picking off random peaks along the beach while the Point offered the only other decent wave in the area. It was far from perfect but there were some solid sets coming through. Unfortunately the Island was out of control, as were the bombies.
To make things worse the wind swung to the south mid morning and the promise of some decent big wave action soon disappeared.
I snapped what shots I could and with the conditions deteriorating decided to head round to Cape Solander where I thought the fickle winds may be providing some action.
Little did I know what I was in for but I was fortunate enough to catch a pretty heavy session going down - pics to follow in Part 2.
