I shot down to Cronulla for a quick surf check first to see just how big it was, as I had other options in mind, but on arrival was disappointed to see the size was nowhere near what had been forecast.
The wind and swell associated with the Lows that form and hang off the Sydney coast are often difficult to predict and this one was no different. The swell was 2-3 ft short of what was initially expected and to make matters worse the winds soon swung more to the south leaving the Point as the only option.
I snapped a couple of shots of the beach break before heading down to the Point which wasn't exactly breaking at its best but at least it was offering enough of a wall for the locals to shred. It was pretty much a drop and a couple of quick right hand hacks before it went fat and fizzled.
Here's a selection of shots which show a number of different approaches to how the locals laid down their cutbacks and reos on the rat handers - a variety of styles but full-on attack.
As it turned out the swell did jump in size the next couple of days and with finicky winds some spots 'went off' - more action to follow later.... Here's one of the dawn patrol about to hit a rather sketchy Cronulla Point early Saturday morning.
Cheers, Strauss
