Poll: Should Kitesurfing be run by Yachting NZ?

  • Yes Yachting NZ would support it well.

  • No it is more aligned with the surfing community and Surfing NZ should have the rights.

  • No a new association should be set up by Kitesurfers.

  • Don't know or care!

After last year’s success, the CUBA night surf generated one of the largest crowds seen off the pier at New Brighton.

The right conditions finally arrived on Saturday May 15th to light up the pier for the annual Canterbury University Boardriders Association (CUBA) night surf. After waiting for the right tides and lights we were good to go, 60+ surfers were rewarded when the wind clocked offshore at 6pm, lights were flicked on and lit up the water for amazing and busy session.

After last year’s success, the CUBA night surf generated one of the largest crowds seen off the pier, national longboard champ Dylan Barnfield, big wave master Doug Young, Hayden Brain and Canterbury champ Lewellyn Thomas were out to name a few having some fun in the lights. CUBA holds approximately 20 events through the year supporting student boardriders in organizing transport, lodging, events and fundraisers for surfing, snowboarding and skateboarding trips.

Without the help of some generous sponsors and volunteers these events would not happen, big thanks goes out to, the whole team at Quiksilver New Brighton, Dale at Skullcandy, Hirepool for the lights, Hamish at Switch Espresso for the coffee and Export Gold, Canadian Club and Mother for the after party.

So a big thanks to CUBA for hosting night surf again and if you’re at Uni join up with the supreme club of the year, they have the best events and don’t just have parties in fields. Check out their website for more info at cuba.org.nz.
